Get ready! Kominfo May Block PUBG and Free Fire (FF) Games?
Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) asked to block online games PUBG and Free Fire (FF)? It’s really unfortunate the fate of online games like PUBG and Free Fire. After previously being accused of being haram, being blasphemed because they were considered to have insulted Islamic symbols, now the discourse of blocking the two of them has re-emerged.
The blocking was a request from the Regent of Mukomuko, Bengkulu Province, Sapuan to Kominfo. This is because the best war games are considered to have a negative impact on children as well as trigger acts of violence.
Mukomuko Regent Letters to Kominfo
“The regent has submitted an application letter to ask the Minister of Communication and Information through the Directorate General of Information at the Ministry of Communication and Information to block online games in the Mukomuko Regency area,” said Head of the Mukomuko Regency Communication and Information Office Bustari Maller in a statement at Mukomuko, Tuesday (22/6), as quoted Between.
“They, the children, have become addicts to online games so this condition should immediately receive serious attention from the central government,” he said.
Kominfo will not only block PUBG and Free Fire, other games that are also targeted for blocking are Mobile Legends (ML) and Higgs Domino, both mobile and on PC devices. Regent Mukomuko deliberately asked Kominfo directly because his party did not have the authority to block a game.
The impact of online games has long been a debate in society. Not only in Indonesia, the issue of blocking also occurs in several countries, including countries that are known to be free like America.
Step back a little, not long after the shooting incident that killed 17 people in Florida. In front of game industry leaders, former United States President Donald Trump accused video games of being the cause of violence in the real world.
The United States presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton, said that for teenagers, online games were as dangerous as cigarettes. Based on information, cases of violence using weapons in the United States reach 30,000 cases a year.
“Playing violent video games for teens is like smoking tobacco for lung cancer.”
Kominfo response
The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) has opened its voice regarding the blocking request submitted to it. This reaction was conveyed by Dedy Permadi after receiving reports that related online games have a negative impact on children’s development, health and education.
In response to the request, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) said it was still considering requests from a number of parties for the blocking of online games such as Free Fire, PUBG and the like.
“In principle, Kominfo will process and consider any complaints or all requests for blocking received, of course, based on applicable regulations,” said Kominfo spokesman Dedy Permadi when contacted, Thursday (24/6/2022).
“All blocking requests will be processed as long as they are carried out by interested parties, through the complaint channels that have been established. The process is also carried out carefully and involves the developer of the game or application provider,” explained Dedy.
Furthermore, a spokesman for the Ministry of Communication and Information, Dedy Permadi, said that his party cannot immediately block a game, let alone block it on a national scale. According to him, there are rules that must be followed that regulate the regulations and the authority of Kominfo.
The regulation is stated in the Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation No. 5 of 2022 concerning Private Scope Electronic System Operators as amended through Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation No. 10 Year 2022.
“All blocking requests will be processed as long as they are carried out by interested parties, through the complaint channels that have been established. The process is also carried out carefully and involves the developer of the game or application provider,” explained Dedy.
Previously, in 2022, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics stated that the discourse on blocking the online game PUBG and several similar games that were also under the spotlight was still being discussed. Kominfo has not determined the fate of the online game because it is still conducting discussions and discussions involving collaboration with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and various related parties, such as the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), and the Indonesian e-Sports Association (IeSPA).
